Analysing MES American Film Unit 26

This screenshot is from the film 'Starred Up', at first glance we can see that this scene was shot from a high angle, this gives us a idea about the prisoners surroundings on a daily basis, even when they are trying to look up, they are faced with metal railings which gives off a sense of being trapped and caged like animals, their lifestyle in contrast with old facilities may suggest that prisoners are accustomed to this and their overall attitudes are rough and dull.

The lighting used in the shot is artificial lighting, this tell us that there is no day and night in the prison cells this could propund the idea of prisoners lives being restricted and controled.

In this shot it shows us the iconography of the authorities in prison, Two or more higher ups heavily equipped are on the offence against a rebelling prisoner, this shows us that life in prison is very brutal, we can also see that the prisoner is short-handed against the rioters in terms of props, this could represent how his voice is muted as he does not have enough credit/power, The fact the authorities are fully prepared against this shows us that they see  prisoners only as criminals and that they need to be disciplined hard, they treat the inmates inhumanly similar to animals for example beating them till they listen and because they retort to violence immediately to solve the problem shows us how one sided life is in prison as the protagonist described this place as a 'shit-hole'.

This scene shows us the main character getting into a fight with one of the inmates in their cell, miseenscene is presented through the use of props, the poster of a half naked girl suggests to us that the prisoners are lonely and they do have interests towards females but they are obstructed towards reaching it due to being in prison. This could also represent their only morale in staying in prison and something to keep them from being insane - if they behave the will eventually reach their goal/dream.
Mise-en-scene through the actors - The acting presented in this film is very surreal, we can see that the main characters face is red suggesting that he was made acting this scene as if it was a real scenario.
The image on the right we can see the bruises he acquired from presumably shooting this film.

The camera angle used in this scene shows us how the levels of respect presented, in the previous screenshots the higher authories invaded his cell and didn't allow him to have a voice, but by using this camera angle it shows us that the guy in the suit is different and he respects the prisoner by giving him his personal space. The fact the guy is by the door may suggest to us that he is the light and he wants to help the prisoner as if he is trapped in a room which could portray that he is going in circles and he just needs a bit of a helping hand.
